Behind them a river meanders and to the right is a bluff topped with trees and a castle. In the distance a mountainous landscape unfolds with a settlement as well as further people and buildings.
Whilst this painting is attributed to an artist in the circle of Jacob More, the glowing light that infuses this work is comparable to other landscapes by More, as is the choice of the overhanging bluff in this composition.
The artist died in 1793 whilst preparing to return from Rome. The contents of his studio were brought back to London later, where some were sold. Others were sent to his sister in Edinburgh. So it is possible that in this painting another artist has finished a composition that More had already started.
Jacob More (1740–1793) Jacob More was a Scottish landscape painter and he was born in 1740 in Edinburgh. He studied landscape and decorative painting with James Norie's firm. He took the paintings of Gaspard Dughet and Claude Lorrain as his models.
By 1773 More had settled in Rome, and spent the rest of his life there; nevertheless, in the 1780s he managed to send Italian landscapes back to England for annual exhibitions at the Royal Academy in London. He was a close friend of Thomas Jones (1742-1803), and was one of the artists waiting at the English Coffee House for Jones's arrival in Rome in 1776.
In 1787 he was visited by Goethe, who considered his work 'admirably thought out’ and Reynolds is said to have remarked that 'he was the best painter of air since Claude'.
In Rome he enjoyed a high reputation rivalling Jacob Philipp Hackert and befriending Allan Ramsey (1713-1784) as well as being commissioned to design an 'English' garden in the grounds of the Villa Borghese.
This picture is in an excellent state of conservation, and the previously opaque and discoloured varnish has been removed making it appear somewhat brighter and more colourful in tone than even these images may suggest.
This work now presents exceptionally well in its original hand carved and gilded frame.
