Wigs on the Green has dated these Georgian Oval Framed Portraits to the 18th Century.
Born in 1748 and 1752 respectively, Sarah and Anne were the daughters of the Rev. Francis Woodgate and his wife Mary Thompson of Chiddingston, Kent. A third sister, Elizabeth (born in 1750) married the Rev. William Humphry, younger brother of the artist of the portraits, Ozias Humphry.
The portraits reside in the original deep giltwood frames. There is a small area of damage to one lady's skirt and the frames have slight losses to the edges but otherwise they are fine.
The son of a Devon peruke-maker, Ozias Humphry showed an early aptitude for drawing so was sent to London to study art. A successful career as a portrait artist and miniaturist in England and India followed until his eyesight failed. Humphry never married though he did have a son to whom he bequeathed his collection of books and art.
