These skillfully drawn and charming profile portraits show two ladies in fashionable dresses, ribbon necklaces and striking straw bonnets. They are drawn in pencil with touches of pastel by the well-known miniaturist Ozias Humphrey. The ladies are named on the reverse as Sarah and Anne Woodgate and the drawings are dated November 1780, a few years prior to the artist''s departure to India.Born in 1748 and 1752 respectively, Sarah and Anne were the daughters of the Rev. Francis Woodgate and his wife Mary Thompson of Chiddingston, Kent. A third sister, Elizabeth (born in 1750) married the Rev. William Humphry, younger brother of the artist of the portraits, Ozias Humphry.The portraits reside in the original deep giltwood frames. There is a small area of damage to one lady''s skirt and the frames have slight losses to the edges but otherwise they are fine.
