Mid-19th-century British School, Ships in a Turbulent Sea - Antique Oil Painting

19th century
Description

This mid-19th-century British oil painting depicts three vessels buffeted by turbulent waters. A fully-rigged British frigate heels to starboard with its red ensign fluttering in the breeze. While a smaller barque passes, heeling to its port side.

During the early to mid-19th century, numerous works were produced to highlight the perils of sailing and the plight of intrepid crews. Opportunities within the maritime industry were numerous as England was an advanced globalised nation at the heart of the British Empire. Trade routes to previously inaccessible parts of the world were established and goods were being transported at an unprecedented scale.

The artist of this particular piece is unknown but the composition is similar to a piece by David Dalby of York (fl. 1780-1849).

Held in a later frame.

Overall size: 28” x 24” / 71cm x 61cm
