The Gothic Revival movement emerged in the mid-19th century, drawing inspiration from medieval architecture and design, characterised by pointed arches, heavy proportions, and intricate religious or architectural motifs.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native hardwoods like oak, employing traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved panels, and structural pegging rather than modern metal fixings.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit genuine patina, hand-cut joinery marks, aged timber shrinkage, and accurate historical architectural details such as tracery, finials, and chamfered posts typical of the Victorian era.

Pairing a substantial antique bed with minimalist, neutral linens and contemporary lighting creates a balanced focal point that highlights the craftsmanship without overwhelming the bedroom space.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding extreme humidity fluctuations, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood without sealing the grain.
