This is a fragment of a Milas prayer mat, originating from the Mugla province in southwestern Turkey, Wool on wool, featuring the special aubergine colour associated with Milas rugs of the 19th century. This colour was lost over time and rediscovered only in 1970 by a German recipe for Turkey, using madder in the dying process. Dating from the 19th century, this textile features a traditional mihrab design, used to indicate the direction of prayer in Islamic culture.
