FAQs

Military watercolours have a long tradition as a medium for recording regimental uniforms, campaigns, and portraits of officers, often serving as official records or personal mementoes.

These works typically utilise pigment-based watercolour paints applied to heavy rag paper or card, often encased in hand-gilded wooden frames with layered mounts.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-painted brushwork rather than dot-matrix printing, age-appropriate paper oxidation, and period framing techniques such as old backing boards and fasteners.

Such pieces provide academic character and visual depth when hung in a study, library, or hallway, paired with traditional dark wood furniture or contrasted against minimalist walls.

Watercolours are sensitive to ultraviolet light and moisture, so they should be displayed away from direct sunlight in stable environmental conditions behind protective glazing.
