Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A log grate on andirons, also known as firedogs, is a raised metal structure designed to hold firewood within an open hearth. Historically popular from the seventeenth century onwards, this design elevates the fuel off the hearth floor to improve airflow and combustion efficiency while containing burning logs.

Traditional fire grates are predominantly constructed from cast iron or forged steel to withstand intense heat, often paired with decorative brass or bronze finials and embellishments. The iron or steel forms the load-bearing cradle, while polished brass elements on the front posts provide aesthetic contrast.

Authentic period fire grates usually exhibit signs of hand-forging or heavy sand-casting, including minor variations in thickness and visible joinery such as rivets or threaded bolts. Wear patterns, authentic heat oxidisation on the underside, and natural patina on the brass elements distinguish older examples from modern reproductions.

A steel and brass log grate can serve as a focal point within a traditional or contemporary fireplace opening, even when not in active use. Stacking structured hardwood logs within the cradle adds natural texture, while pairing it with clean fireside tools creates a balanced blend of historical craftsmanship and contemporary design.

To preserve the metals, clean ash regularly using a soft brush and avoid exposing steel or cast iron to excess moisture, which causes rust. Apply black grate polish to the steel surfaces to protect against oxidation, and clean brass finials using a non-abrasive metal cleaner.
