FAQs

Gothic Revival furniture draws inspiration from medieval architecture, featuring heavy proportions, pointed arches, trefoils, and robust turned or carved supports that reflect a romanticised medieval aesthetic.

Cabinetmakers frequently utilised dense native and imported timbers such as pitch pine, oak, and mahogany, often incorporating inset leather or baize writing surfaces and cast-brass hardware.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails in the drawer construction, traditional timber shrinkage, and genuine oxidisation on brass handles and fittings.

Pairing a substantial wooden writing table with modern minimalist seating or positioning it within a study creates a functional focal point that contrasts historical weight with clean, contemporary lines.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a dry cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax, while cleaning the leather surface gently with a damp cloth followed by a specialised leather conditioner.
