Description

A slim & small proportioned antique satinwood inlaid mahogany chest of drawers. This was made in England & dates from around the 1900-1910 period.

The quality is superb, there is gorgeous satin wood inlay around the top edge and drawer fronts. The brass handles are original and are also of very high quality, this sits on nicely shaped splayed bracket feet. The carcass is solid mahogany and has interesting exposed dovetailed joints on the front in between the drawers.

We have had this re-polished, it is in excellent condition for its age. There are a few small bumps and marks here and there beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Mahogany became widely used in British cabinet making during the 18th century, prized for its stability and rich grain, often enhanced with contrasting satinwood stringing and inlay during the late Georgian and Regency periods.

Authentic period chests are constructed using solid mahogany and secondary softwoods, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, mortise and tenon frames, and solid brass hardware.

Key indicators of age include hand-cut dovetails, irregular hand-planed drawer linings, shrinkage cracks in the timber, and original or period-appropriate brass handles with corresponding backplate impressions.

An antique wooden chest adds warmth and textural contrast to contemporary spaces when paired with minimalist surroundings, clean-lined upholstery, and simple decorative objects on the surface.

Maintain antique timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping, and clean periodically with a soft cloth and natural beeswax, avoiding silicone-based polishes.
