Description

Striking Japanese Meiji/Taisho (early 20thC) bronze of a seated Holy Kannon by Koun Takamura (1852-1934). Kannon, the Bodhisattva of mercy and compassion, is elegantly sculpted, seated on a rock holding a scroll (Buddhist sutra) in her left hand, her hair piled in a tall topknot, wearing a necklace and long robe. The artist has gracefully depicted Kannon's subtle facial expression, elegant pose and cascading robe.

Signed in an impressed seal at the rear, Koun Takamura (1852-1934), one of Japan’s most celebrated sculptors and a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Measures 18cm tall, 13.5cm wide x 9.5cm deep, weighs 1.6kg.

The Meiji and Taisho periods in Japan marked a golden era for metalwork, transitioning from traditional samurai armour production to exquisite fine art bronzes created for both domestic shrines and international export markets.

These sculptures were typically cast using the traditional lost-wax method, utilizing a copper alloy known as kara-gane, often finished with various chemical patinations to achieve deep brown, black, or gilded tones.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy weight, precise hand-chased surface details, naturalistic ageing patination, and frequently bear artist signatures, maker marks, or foundry seals cast into or engraved on the base.

An antique bronze sculpture can be placed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or console table as a focal point, pairing well with natural wood textures, neutral walls, and minimalist display settings to highlight its craftsmanship.

Preservation requires dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any chemical polishes, abrasives, or water that might strip the historic patina, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels.
