An antique Kurdish salt-bag is a utilitarian woven pouch produced by nomadic tribes, specifically the Jaf confederation in the Zagros mountains, used historically to store rock salt for livestock.

These bags are traditionally constructed using hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, often featuring asymmetric knots and flatweave backings dyed with natural vegetable colorants.

Authentic pieces are identified by specific geometric diamond motifs, saturated indigo and madder red palettes, dense wool quality, and traditional selvedge finishes characteristic of nineteenth-century nomadic production.

These pieces are frequently mounted on linen backgrounds and framed as wall art, or integrated into eclectic spaces as small decorative accents on surfaces or shelving.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming with a mesh screen cover, keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and avoiding moisture accumulation.
