Antique Serapi Carpet

19th century
Description

An amazing tribal antique Serapi carpet with the best palette of colours that we associate with weavings from Heriz area in the mid to late 19th century.  The scrolling and primitive geometric border design with vines connecting the stylised flowers, often known as the turtle border, is a wonderful tribal design.  A large pattern and these faded and beautiful natural dyes are more often found with Serapis rather than younger Heriz rugs from North West Persia.  In very good original order, with an excellent wool pile all over.  A beautiful rustic antique Serapi carpet woven around 1870-1880 this is one of the best we have owned for a while.

Antique Serapi carpets are more intricate finer tribal weavings of the Heriz region hand-woven by Azerbaijan Turkish inhabitants close to the city of Heriz in North-West Persia. They are famous among collectors because of their vivid vegetable dyes or soft earth tones that are woven on a geometric pattern.  In terms of design, drawing, and coloration as well, Serapi carpets are clearly part of one and the same tradition as Heriz, despite being a distinct antique rug style, which originated as a Northwest Persian adaptation of early Sarouk Farahan medallion, but with a more geometric, abstract, village sensibility.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Serapi carpets originate from the Heriz weaving region of Northwest Persia, crafted predominantly during the nineteenth century. The term designates a finer tier of Heriz weave featuring expansive medallion designs and spacious geometric composition.

These carpets were hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool pile woven on a durable cotton foundation. Artisans utilised natural plant and mineral dyes, including madder root for warm terracotta tones and indigo for blues.

Authentic Serapi pieces display open, geometric medallion patterns with stepped spandrels and distinct abrash colour variations. They typically feature a flatter weave profile and softer tone contrast than later twentieth-century Heriz productions.

A Serapi carpet serves as a focal floor covering to anchor seating arrangements in modern or classical rooms. The geometric composition balances contemporary minimalist furniture as well as traditional mahogany or oak pieces.

Vacuum gently without using a rotary beater bar to prevent pile damage, and place a quality rug pad underneath for stability. Professional specialist rug cleaning is recommended, alongside periodic rotation to ensure even wear.
