Description

The Afshar were a large tribal grouping who migrated in south-east Persia for centuries before settling in the towns and village around the city of Kirman from the end of the 19th century. Of Turkic origin, they wove a variety of rugs, carpets and trappings for domestic use and for re-sale, the designs often sharing many ornaments with other Turkic tribal groupings in southern Persia, such as the Qashqai Confederation. However, Afshari weavers were also influenced by the classic design repertoire associated with the court and city carpets woven in nearby Kirman. This lovely rug is such an example. The midnight blue field is decorated with an all-over design of roses, the so-called Gol Farang' design, seen on many city woven carpets of the 19th and early 20th century. It is charmingly drawn. Normally one would expect to see large, expressively drawn roses in such a design. But here the flowers are drawn delicately and with great finesse. Note also the row of larger flowers at the bottom of the field. The ivory border is also quite wonderful with a floral design and meandering vines. The entire composition is jewel-like. Finely knotted with soft wool and great natural dyes, the rug has survived in very good condition. The are minor signs of corrosion in the blue field as one might expect from this dye. The selvages and ends are original and intact. Professionally cleaned. This is both a collectible and highly decorative little Persian rug which would light up many interior settings.
