The City After the Rain, Ca 1920, Figures in the Latin Quarter, Animated Paris Street Scene Woman Artist Oil on Canvas

Description

I try not to buy too many Paris scenes as I am not sure how many of you love the City as much as I do.... but this particular one was too lovely to let slip away! I love the very special silvery light in this painting, the water from a downpour reflected on the pavement and the magical break in the clouds...the latter achieved by the re-working for an older composition on the canvas.

Depicted is the rue Cuvier, with the Cuvier statue to the left, below which figures have congregated. To the right, there is the entrance to the Jardin des Plantes, the botanical gardens. In the foreground, a bistro proudly announcing that it has a public "Telephone".

Our oil on canvas measures 65 x 50 cm and is indistinctly signed at the lower right. The artist's first name is evidently "Rose" but I have not been able to decipher her first name. The painting is presented in its original frame, with which it harmonises perfectly. The overall framed size is 82 x 66 cm.
