The Louis XVI style emerged in France during the late 18th century, characterised by a shift away from rococo curves toward classical symmetry, straight tapering fluted legs, and geometric rectilinear forms influenced by archaeological discoveries.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as beech or walnut, featuring hand-carved floral or classical motifs, mortise and tenon joinery, and traditional horsehair or sprung upholstery webbing.

Identification involves examining the timber ageing, hand-cut joinery marks, tool impressions on the carved elements, and the wear patterns on the frame and finish to distinguish 18th-century work from 19th-century revival pieces.

A traditional settee provides a sophisticated contrast in contemporary spaces when paired with minimalist architecture, modern abstract art, or neutral textiles to highlight the classical woodwork.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting and fabric fading, alongside regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and professional textile cleaning.
