Description

Jozan is a village close to the famous town of Sarouk in West Persia where some of the finest Persian rugs of the 19th century were produced. Jozan rugs are identifiable by their fine natural dyes and their archaic interpretation of the classic Persian design repertoire. In this piece, which is finely knotted and clipped low, we see the Jozan weavers' dyeing techniques at their best. All the colours are exquisite, including the delightful rose background, the indigo and light blue, the ivory, golds and browns. But it is the greens which are the most eye-catching, in particular an amazing apple green which appears in the upper part of the field. The design is also most striking. An anchor medallion dominates the field which is drawn with such elegance and panache that one's eye is constantly drawn to it. The floral ornaments surrounding the medallion are very pretty, while the spandrels in the four corners of the field which are dominated by ivory cruciforms are quite stunning. Note also the additional elements of the medallion design at each of the field to suggest that what we are seeing is just part of a continuum. It is a really great composition. The narrow borders are pretty and act as a perfect frame to the high action in the field. This rug has survived the generations well. There is minor corrosion in some of the browns, and the selvages have been replaced. Otherwise, it is in great original condition with good even pile throughout. Professionally cleaned in our workshop.
