Size: 3ft 7in x 1ft 4in (109 x 41cm) face size.

Antique Yomut Turkmen torba with well drawn 'kepse' gul design.

Circa 1880.

A very good Yomut torba with excellent colour and good wool. The torba has survived very well with some of the original tassels still intact. These torba were used to decorate the side of a camel during a Turkmen wedding procession, these were prized possessions and formed part of the wedding dowry. The were kept as heirlooms and displayed inside the yurt. This example is of fine weave and has survived in excellent condition. The design features two 'kepse' guls, this design is usually found on main carpets by the Yomut. Note the excellent main ivory ground border which is very finely drawn.

The torba is in excellent condition with very slight wear and excellent full pile.

A torba is a small, horizontal bag traditionally woven by Turkmen nomadic tribes in Central Asia, utilised primarily for household storage inside a yurt.

These pieces are traditionally hand-knotted from handspun wool with natural dyes derived from plants and minerals, predominantly featuring rich madder red tones alongside dark indigo and ivory.

Authenticity is assessed through the density of the wool pile, structural characteristics such as the weave and selvages, the complexity of tribal guls, and natural colour variations known as abrash.
