Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian framed artwork depicts two child profile figures and a small dog within a landscape wash detail on paper, under glass. The wide wooden frame displays a warm brown bird's eye maple veneer, accentuated by mitred corners and a small brass hanging ring at the top edge. The interior artwork shows ink silhouette cut-outs of two youngsters in dresses facing each other alongside a small animal, set against a faint grey background with distant trees and a fence line. The overall piece measures 20 cm high and 26 cm wide. Ideal for placement in a narrow wall space within a traditional interior, this decorative work brings an authentic English country house style to a hallway, study, or landing. The composition integrates easily into existing wall galleries alongside paintings and prints, offering a discreet historical accent. Hanging hardware allows for immediate mounting on any suitable vertical surface.

FAQs

Popularised during the 18th and early 19th centuries, silhouettes offered an accessible alternative to miniature painted portraits, capturing detailed profiles through cut paper or brushwork in dark pigment.

Period silhouettes were typically created using india ink or watercolor wash on rag paper, housed in protective glass within figured timber frames such as birds eye maple or rosewood.

Authentic period silhouettes exhibit hand-painted detail or delicate hand-cutting, age-appropriate toning or foxing to the paper substrate, and original timber frames with period backing.

Displaying silhouettes grouped together on a gallery wall or positioned singly on a mantelpiece adds monochrome visual contrast and historical interest to modern spaces.

To preserve antique paper and timber frames, display the item away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and heat sources, using UV-filtering glass if re-glazing is required.
