Antique Victorian Mahogany Architects Desk

19th century
Sold 17 January 2025 · Marylebone Antiques
This “Antique Victorian Mahogany Architects Desk ” found a buyer.

It was listed by Marylebone Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A beautiful and very unusual early antique Victorian mahogany architects desk. This was made in England, and I would date it from the 1840-1860 period.

It appears as a regular pedestal desk with a gold tooled leather top, turned mahogany handles and bun feet. However, on the back, there are gate leg supports that swing out, and the top unfolds to reveal a larger inner work space. There is another inset leather top inside that can be angles upwards, and six small storage compartments with lids.

We have had this re-polished, it is in lovely condition for its age. The colour tone and patina of the mahogany are lovely. The outer leather top has some surface wear and light marks, with one tiny repair to the leather in the middle. We could have it re-leathered, but right now the leather matches the one inside.

This is quite a rare & useful piece of furniture & is also of very high quality.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, characterised by robust craftsmanship, dark woods like mahogany and walnut, and functional specialisation for the expanding professional classes.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, brass hardware, and tooled leather writing surfaces.

Authenticity is determined by examining drawer construction for hand-cut dovetailing, looking for natural age-related timber shrinkage, checking for period-appropriate locks and fixings, and observing the patina on the wood and leather.

Pairing a dark wood antique desk with modern minimalist seating, contemporary abstract art, and sleek lighting creates a balanced juxtaposition between historic craftsmanship and modern interior design.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a soft cloth and occasionally applying quality beeswax, while protecting the leather surface from direct sunlight and harsh cleaning chemicals by using specialized leather balms.
