Antique Afghan Kizil Ayak Turkmen Prayer Rug, Dated and Inscribed, Circa 1892.

19th century
Description

Size: 4ft 5in x 2ft 9in (134 x 85cm).

Antique Afghan Kizil Ayak Turkmen prayer rug with triple rams horn design to the Mihrab.

Circa 1892.

A very rare Afghan prayer rug which is inscribed and dated, the date reads 1310.... which translates to 1892; the inscription is below the mihrab and in the main field of the rug. This rug was obviously of great importance to the weaver or more likely the person who commissioned it. The rug was probably woven by the Kizil Ayak Turkmen in Northern Afghanistan.

The rug is in fair condition with wear and medium / low pile. Both ends retain the original long kilims, these are showing some signs of historic wear.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use or would make a great display item as a wall hanging.

Stock Number: D-0532.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kizil Ayak Turkmen prayer rugs are hand-knotted textiles crafted by Central Asian nomadic weavers, characterised by geometric tribal iconography and a central mihrab niche design intended to orient the worshipper.

These textiles were hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation, saturated with natural plant and mineral dyes to produce warm brown, terracotta, and rust tones.

Authentic examples feature asymmetrical knotting, natural dye abrash variations, hand-bound selvedges, and occasionally date inscriptions or Arabic script woven directly into the field by the weaver.

A hand-woven tribal rug adds warmth when layered on neutral floorboards, positioned in a reading corner, or hung on a wall as an acoustic art display.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating beater bar, rotate periodically to distribute traffic wear, and spot-clean immediately using cold water and a clean cloth.
