Antique Timuri / Baluch Rug, Western Afghanistan, Beautiful Small Rug, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 5ft 3in x 2ft 9in (160 x 84cm).

Antique Afghan Timuri Baluch rug from Western Afghanistan with Turkmen inspired design.

Circa 1880.

A good Timuri Baluch rug from Western Afghanistan, with repeat diagonal rows of a Turkmen design. The design in soft madder red and indigo blue stand out against the olive brown ground. The olive brown is corroded and leaves the design standing proud in profile. The small narrow borders frame the rug well. Note the original kilim remaining at both ends.

The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile, there is some dye corrosion to the olive browns, giving it a low pile height.

A good Timuri rug with excellent wool quality and older than most examples.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

Stock Number: DS-0670.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Timuri Baluch rugs were woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic Baluch tribes, specifically the Timuri sub-group, inhabiting the borderlands of western Afghanistan and eastern Persia during the nineteenth century.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile on a wool warp and weft foundation, utilising natural plant and mineral dyes to produce deep indigo, terracotta, and rich brown tones.

Authentic antique pieces feature soft wool pile, dark somber colour palettes, repeating geometric diamond motifs, flat-weave kilim ends, and a light, flexible structure.

A dark-toned Baluch rug adds depth and visual texture to contemporary spaces, contrasting cleanly with mid-century timber furniture, neutral linen upholstery, and dark leather seating.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting using suction only without a rotating brush bar, rotate the rug annually to equalise wear, and clean liquid spills immediately with an absorbent, damp cloth.
