Isfahan is one of the most beautiful cities in Persia, and was once an imperial capital. Rug weaving was established in the courts as early as the 17th century and continues to this day. This is a lovely rug which, even compared to other rugs of this genre and period, has an exceptionally high knot count, with fine grainy wool and wonderful dyes. In particular I like the burnt orange shades and the greens. The central anchor medallion is glorious and is surrounded by a slightly angular drawing of arabesques and spandrels. The main border is equally beautiful and complements the field well. This is a very decorative furnishing piece which is enhanced by the changes of colour or abrashes that run through the design. It is thin and fine, and is really a work of textile art. Generally good condition, professionally cleaned.
