This Victorian chest of drawers is formed from pine with a burr walnut scrumble finish and dates to around 1850. The piece presents a warm brown colour with a deep, rich patinated walnut effect across its surfaces. The exterior displays original unrestored condition, showing the natural grain patterns of the finish alongside straightforward rectangular proportions and a moulded top edge. Configuration comprises two small upper drawers positioned above three large lower drawers, each fitted with round turned wooden handles. Short turned feet support the base of the cabinet directly on the ground. Measuring 122 cm high, 119 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, the cabinet provides substantial storage capacity for clothing or household linens. The rustic farmhouse aesthetic suits placement within either a period property or a contemporary interior setting, functioning effectively as a freestanding bedroom storage unit or a hallway focal point.

FAQs

Popularised in the nineteenth century, Victorian pine chests of drawers were crafted as practical storage units featuring utilitarian pine timber, simple turned handles, and a standard drawer arrangement.

These chests typically utilised solid pine timber assembled using dovetail joints for the drawer boxes, solid back panels, and hand-turned wooden knobs secured onto original drawer fronts.

Authentic Victorian examples feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-planed rear boards, keyhole escutcheons, and signs of natural timber oxidation and movement consistent with age.

A pine chest adds warmth to modern spaces when set against contemporary wall paint, styled with modern table lamps, or layered with structured decorative objects to contrast the rustic timber finish.

Maintain the timber surface by applying a high-quality clear beeswax paste along the grain twice per year, keeping the chest away from direct heating elements to prevent excessive wood shrinkage.
