Tekke Turkmen rugs were traditionally hand-knotted by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting the region of Turkmenistan, renowned for their intricate geometric guls and cultural significance.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from hand-spun wool pile on a wool or cotton foundation, often coloured using natural organic dyes such as cochineal, madder root, and indigo.

Authenticity is determined by examining the fineness of the knot count, the presence of natural abrash in the wool, traditional symmetrical knotting, and characteristic geometric gul motifs.

Pairing a richly patterned antique rug with minimalist or modern furniture creates a striking visual contrast, grounding the space while adding warmth, texture, and historical depth.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, keeping the item out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and professional periodic washing to protect the natural wool fibres.
