A complete spindle-bag, complete with tassels and plain-weave back, made circa 1870 in the trans-Caspian steppes of Turkmenistan by Yomut Turkmen.

Now very scarce, this once-utilitarian bag for containing spindles, is in very good condition.

Spindle bags, known traditionally as iklik or iqlyk, were crafted by nomadic Turkmen tribes, such as the Yomut, in Central Asia. They were specially designed to store drop spindles, wool fibers, and spinning equipment during migratory movements.

These textiles were hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheeps wool on a wool warp and weft structure. Dyes were derived from natural organic sources, including madder root for deep reds and indigo for blues, often finished with decorative wool tassels and selvedges.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical or symmetrical wool knots, natural colour variations (abrash), structural wear consistent with nomadic use, and specific heraldic tribal motifs such as serrated diamonds, tree motifs, or family guls.
