Antique Quchan Kurd Rug with Turkmen Gul Design, Thick Pile, Circa 1900/20.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 7ft 7in x 4ft 9in (230 x 145cm).

Antique Quchan Kurd rug with Turkmen style gul design.

Circa 1900/20.

This is an interesting example of a relatively small group of rugs woven by the Quchan Kurds of Eastern Persia. The gul design is very similar to that of the Ersari Turkmen, although the colour palette is clearly Kordi. The weave is also coarser with longer soft pile, giving the rug a very floppy handle. The three rows of guls stand out against the rich burgundy red ground. The border design is interesting and frames the rug well.

The rug is in good condition with slight wear and good pile, there is an old repair to the kilim at the lower left hand corner, and the left hand side of the rug is a little wrinkled. (All reflected in the price).

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

Stock number: D-5022.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Quchan Kurd rugs originate from Northeast Persia, crafted by Kurdish weavers who incorporated geometric designs and Turkmen motifs such as octagonal guls due to geographic proximity.

These rugs are hand-knotted using natural wool pile on a wool or cotton warp, incorporating vegetable dyes to produce deep reds, terracottas, and navy tones.

Authenticity is indicated by a thick wool pile, subtle dye variations known as abrash, asymmetrical hand-knotted construction, and distinct repeating octagonal medallion motifs.

A geometric tribal rug anchors contemporary living spaces by adding warm earthy tones and rich texture, balancing minimalist furniture and natural timber finishes.

Vacuum regularly without a rotating beater bar, rotate the rug periodically to ensure even wear, and clean liquid spills promptly using cold water and mild detergent.
