Vintage Turkish Kayseri 'Art Silk' Rug with Repeat Floral Design, Circa 1930.

1920 - 1940
Description

Size: 7ft 3in x 4ft 11in (221 x 150cm).

Vintage Anatolian Kayseri 'art silk' rug, beautifully drawn with a repeat floral design.

Circa 1930.

'Art Silk' is a widely accepted term for cotton that has been mercerised, this is a treatment process that strengthens the cotton and gives it the characteristics of silk; only a detailed test process can distinguish mercerised cotton from real silk. Beautiful rugs using this process have been made since the end of the 19th century. This enables you to buy a rug that looks like silk at a fraction of the price of real silk.

This rug is of good size with exceptionally dense, heavy weave. The soft pastel colours make it very easy to decorate with, a superb furnishing rug. Outstanding drawing and design with wonderful old colours, the border design is superb.

Very good condition, slight even wear and good pile, suitable for normal domestic use.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.

Stock Number: R-2618.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kayseri rugs originate from the Kayseri region in central Anatolia, Turkey, a renowned weaving centre since the Ottoman period. These rugs are recognised for detailed floral motifs, medallion compositions, and the use of materials including silk and mercerised cotton, often referred to as art silk.

Art silk, typically mercerised cotton or viscose, is utilised to achieve the sheen and soft feel of natural silk. The foundation of these rugs usually features a durable cotton warp and weft, giving structural stability to intricate hand-knotted patterns.

Authentic Kayseri rugs display fine knotting density with intricate, curvilinear floral patterns and symmetrical medallions. Examining the reverse side reveals a clear knot structure that mirrors the top design precisely, along with natural variations in pile wear consistent with age.

A patterned Kayseri rug acts as a grounding visual anchor in contemporary or eclectic interiors. Pairing rich terracotta, brown, and purple hues with neutral furniture or natural timber creates warmth and visual texture.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting to avoid catching delicate fibres or fringe threads. Professional cleaning with low-moisture methods is recommended for stain removal, while rotating the rug periodically prevents uneven wear from foot traffic and sunlight.
