This Victorian credenza dates from around 1850 in the mid-19th century. The piece takes the form of a large serpentine cabinet constructed from warm brown burr walnut veneer with rich figuring, complemented by clear curved glass panels on the side display sections and matching glazed central doors. Gilded ormolu mounts adorn the vertical divisions and corners, whilst decorative brass mouldings border the door frames. Inside, the shelves are lined with dark red fabric upholstery, creating a striking contrast against the dark timber interior. Measuring 199 cm wide, 43 cm deep, and 103 cm high, the credenza stands on a substantial plinth base with turned circular foot blocks. The serpentine silhouette and extensive glass display areas make this furniture suitable for positioning along a principal wall in a drawing room or dining room to exhibit decorative objects, porcelain, or silver collections behind locked doors.

Mid-19th century credenzas are ornate storage and display cabinets featuring glazed doors, detailed veneers such as burr walnut, and metal mounts, popularised during the Victorian era.

Craftsmen primarily utilised cabinet woods such as burr walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, incorporating glass display panels and cast brass or gilded bronze mounts.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, book-matched burr walnut veneers, original curved glass side compartments, and cast gilded bronze fittings.

Position the cabinet as a central focal point in a dining room or hallway, pairing its elaborate wood grain with understated contemporary artwork or clean-lined wall lighting.

Maintain the polished finish by dusting with a dry lint-free cloth and applying microcrystalline wax sparingly, avoiding placement near direct heat sources or damp areas.
