Eighteenth Century Still Life Miniature Oil Painting

18th century
Description

A charming oil on oak panel miniature still life. The work is very much in the manner of the Dutch Golden Age with a lavish table setting depicted. There are jugs and flagons, with a lobster on a platter, and bread or pies to the side. The painting is very capably handled particularly as it is in miniature with great detail captured in the slightest addition of colour and the flick of a brush. The work is not signed as might be expected for this age and style, it does however retain a label on the reverse for Jakob Bogdani. I do not think the painting is by this old master but most likely a sketch taken from or inspired by his work. The painting is in very good untouched condition and is mounted in a later nineteenth/early twentieth century frame, which it has been in for some time. The frame is in good untouched condition and works very well with the piece. The whole has a great period look and is an interesting and decorative piece. C.1750.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Miniature still life paintings of this era typically showcase intimate, highly detailed compositions of domestic items such as ceramics, glassware, and foodstuffs, executed with subtle lighting and rich tonal contrasts.

Artists during this period primarily used oil pigments bound with linseed or walnut oil, applied onto small wooden panels or tightly stretched linen canvas, often presented in hand-carved gilt wood frames.

Authentic period paintings display natural age-related craquelure, historical framing hardware, organic timber shrinkage on panel supports, and subtle patination across both the painted surface and gilding.

Small period artwork can be integrated into a contemporary gallery wall, layered alongside modern ceramics on a bookshelf, or used as a focal point in narrow wall areas to add texture and historical warmth.

Dust the artwork gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoid direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations, and consult a professional art conservator for surface varnish cleaning.
