French Empire Commode a Porte with Marble Top

Description

Very decorative and unusual early 19th century French Empire “commode a porte” or chest with doors, circa 1830 and with all original brass mounts and marble top.

This a a striking piece of furniture, the combination of the rich mahogany tones and the brass mounts is fabulous, finished with the dark charcoal marble top and ebonised lions paw feet.

Inside the doors you have a full width drawer and a central full width shelf, also the lock and key are in working order too.

Measuring:

31 1/2 inches or 80 cm high

49 3/4 inches or 126.5 cm wide

24 1/2 inches or 62.5 cm deep

7 inches or 18 cm bottom shelf height

6 1/4 inches or 16 cm top shelf height

French Empire furniture emerged in the early nineteenth century under Napoleon I, characterised by architectural symmetry, Neoclassical motifs, rich mahogany veneers, and ornate gilt-bronze mounts inspired by ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian forms.
