FAQs

Art Deco Chinese carpets typically feature asymmetrical floral motifs, heavily embossed or carved pile techniques, and a fusion of traditional Chinese symbolism with Western modernist design influences, often produced during the 1920s and 1930s.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, characterised by a dense pile that is subsequently hand-carved around the motifs to create a three-dimensional relief effect.

Authenticity is identified by examining the asymmetry of the carving, the natural irregularities in the hand-spun wool, the specific pastel or neutral colour palettes common to the period, and the traditional cotton warp and weft construction.

An antique carved rug can serve as a grounding textural element in a contemporary living room, pairing well with minimalist furniture and neutral upholstery to highlight its sculptural pile and subtle pattern.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialist cleaning when necessary, rotation to ensure even wear, and the use of a breathable rug underlay to prevent sliding and fibre abrasion.
