Antique Ziegler Carpet

Description

A wonderful antique Ziegler carpet woven with a natural wool off-white background, one of the rarest colours to find. The deep indigo blue border is a great frame for the main design and colours, we also have some beautifully drawn birds in the border design in-between the floral patterns.  The main field design consists of large scale abstract flowers and leaves, the natural dyes of sage green, muted pink, gold tones and aubergine/brown early dyes create a fantastic palette.  This carpet would be a dream to scheme around choosing fabrics to work with it for a drawing room or study for example.  So many fabulous colours to use.

Woven in the 19th century, we can see some minor old restoration in areas, nothing too considerable, and in general the pile height is exceptional throughout, with beautiful soft dyes we associate with the Ziegler & Co workshop carpets.

Farnham Antique Carpets are specialists in antique decorative carpets, rugs and runners. Varying from antique tribal rugs woven in the Caucasus to classical Persian carpets dating from the mid 19th century to the early 20th century.

As members of the BADA - The British Antique Dealers Association and LAPADA - The Association of Art & Antique Dealers we adhere to strict guide lines as affiliated members and pride ourselves on maintaining its high standards. We exhibit at the BADA fair in Chelsea, London every March and the LAPADA Fair in Mayfair, London every September.

Ziegler carpets were originally commissioned in the late 19th century by Ziegler & Co. of Manchester in Sultanabad, Persia, specifically designed to suit Western interior tastes with larger scales and softer colour palettes.

These carpets were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile on a cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured with natural vegetable dyes to produce muted, soft tones.

Authentic examples feature soft, muted palette tones, large-scale open floral or palmette motifs, a flexible handle, and minor irregularities characteristic of hand-knotting rather than uniform machine production.

The neutral ground and understated palette allow these carpets to anchor contemporary minimalist spaces, traditional living rooms, or dining areas with subtle texture and pattern.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar, rotate annually to ensure even wear, and clean professional spot stains using specialised wool-safe methods.
