William Greaves (1852-1938) was born in Leeds and studied at Sheffield College of Art. He travelled and exhibited widely at galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and Liverpool. He worked mostly in oils and his subjects include landscapes in and around Wharfedale in Yorkshire and Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire.

"Near East Keswick, December 1926" is an oil painting on board measuring 11"x 9". It is signed and dated 1926 and is framed giving an overall size of 17"x 15".
