This nineteenth-century oil painting on canvas depicts a black and white spaniel standing in an open rural landscape beneath a cloudy sky, with a distant country house visible among trees on the left. Painted by Charles Bilger Spalding and signed in the lower right corner, the artwork belongs to the Victorian fine art tradition. The composition includes an ochre and green grassy foreground, rolling hills, and a backdrop of autumn-toned foliage. The canvas sits within a wide, highly ornate gilded wooden frame featuring rich relief carving, layered scrolling mouldings, and corner ornamentation in a bright gold finish. Measuring 41.5 cm high and 57 cm wide, this framed animal portrait suits placement above the mantel in a traditional study, hallway, or living room setting.

Nineteenth-century British sporting art emerged alongside a growing cultural appreciation for rural sports, breeding, and canine companionship. Artists of this era focused on capturing precise anatomical proportions, naturalistic coats, and expansive atmospheric country landscapes.

Paintings from this period were typically executed with oil pigments on stretched linen or cotton canvas, occasionally mounted on wooden panels. Frames were predominantly crafted from wood decorated with cast gesso ornamentation and covered in real gold leaf gilding.

Authentic paintings display natural age-related craquelure across the paint layer, genuine oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas, and period-appropriate stretching techniques. Frames usually exhibit wear to the gilding, revealing red or grey clay bole beneath the surface.

Classic portraiture creates visual interest when hung as an focal accent above a fireplace mantelpiece, integrated into an eclectic gallery wall, or placed within a dark-toned library space to contrast contemporary furnishings.

Keep the canvas out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent cracking and fading. Clean both the paint surface and gilded frame exclusively with a dry, soft-feather duster or camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical polish.
