Introduction

Fine late Victorian British canine oil painting depicting two King Charles Spaniels seated together in a wooded landscape.

The chestnut and white dog is a Blenheim Spaniel. Its black, white and tan companion represents the historic Prince Charles or tricolour variety.

Both animals sit in profile looking towards the right, creating an attractive and characterful Victorian dog portrait.

Subject

The dogs belong to the historic British King Charles or toy spaniel tradition.

The Blenheim variety has longstanding associations with Blenheim Palace and the Dukes of Marlborough, while Prince Charles was the traditional name for the tricolour variety.

Their contrasting coats are particularly effective against the muted green and brown landscape.

Attribution

Catalogued in the manner of John Dalby of York (1810-1865).

Dalby was a noted British sporting and animal painter. A recorded signed painting entitled King Charles Spaniels Seated in a Wooded Landscape provides a particularly relevant comparison.

The present painting dates from after Dalby's lifetime and is not represented as being painted by him.

Dating

Circa 1880.

The previous auction description identified the painting as late 19th century. Circa 1880 is an approximate catalogue date rather than a documented year.

This nineteenth-century oil painting on panel depicts two King Charles Spaniels, a Blenheim and a tricolour variety, set within a muted green and brown wooded landscape. Created in the manner of John Dalby of York during the Victorian period circa 1880, the artwork belongs to the British School tradition of canine portraiture. The panel is enclosed within a decorative giltwood and composition frame featuring raised laurel leaf and berry moulding, showing rubbing, chips, and small losses, while the oil surface displays age-related craquelure, surface marks, abrasions, and historic paint wear. The framed piece measures 31 cm high, 34 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Positioned in an English Country House style interior, the artwork sits naturally above a mantel in a study or hallway. The dual canine depiction brings a classic sporting and animal art aesthetic to a domestic setting, complementing traditional wall finishes and period furnishings. Collectors of antique dog paintings and historic toy spaniels find the compact scale and dual subject matter particularly appealing for display.

Canine portraiture gained immense popularity during the nineteenth century, particularly in Great Britain during the Victorian era. Queen Victorias affection for purebred dogs, such as King Charles Spaniels, established pet portraiture as a prominent sub-genre within animalier fine art.

These works were executed using oil paints on stretched linen canvas or wood panel. Frames from this period were typically constructed from wood coated in gesso plaster, finished with hand-applied gold leaf or bronze powders.

Authentic period paintings exhibit natural craquelure across the paint surface, consistent oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas or panel, and genuine wear to the gilding on raised frame mouldings.

An antique oil painting works well as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece, integrated into a salon-style gallery wall, or paired with contemporary furniture to create a layered, eclectic space.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading. Dust the surface lightly with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, and avoid using liquid cleaners or water on gilded wood.
