FAQs

Cold painted bronze refers to bronze sculptures that are painted with layers of oil-based paint rather than fired in a kiln. The technique gained significant popularity in Vienna during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, championed by foundries such as Franz Bergman.

These pieces are typically cast in bronze or brass using the lost-wax casting method, followed by hand-chasing to refine the details. Artisans then apply polychrome cold paint by hand, a fragile finish that often exhibits natural wear over time.

Authentic pieces generally feature crisp, hand-finished detailing, heavy weight relative to size, and specific foundry marks, stamps, or cyphers (such as the Bergman urn) concealed on the underside or base. The patina of the metal beneath chipped paint should show appropriate age-related oxidation.

Such objects work effectively as focal points on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or executive desks, adding texture and historical character to a room. They pair particularly well with dark wood surfaces, leather accents, and curated galleries of art.

To protect the delicate cold-painted finish, pieces should be kept out of direct sunlight and away from high-humidity areas. Cleaning must be restricted to very gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush; water, chemical solvents, or polishes will permanently strip the painted surface.
