Antique Bidjar Kelleh

19th century
Description

An exceptional, early antique Bidjar kelleh, dating from circa 1880-1890 the weave is extremely fine indeed.  This amazing large corridor carpet has a small scale all over Herati design, which in early carpets from the 16-17th century depicted two fish swimming around a water-lily.  Rugs in the 18th-19th century had this design stylised which resembles two leaves around a flower. The border designs are stunning with amazing natural colours, soft terracotta/pinkish tones, with minor ivory borders, they work well with the main field colour.  Deep dark blues for the background which almost change to black in places and vibrant reds, oranges and hints of purple for the design.

Condition is really fabulous, with a wonderful soft wool pile and no significant restoration, some preservation to the ends and sides, as you would expect on a carpet dating over 140 years old.

If you would like to request a home or showroom visit we can show you this outstanding Bidjar carpet in person. We travel all over the UK helping customers and interior designers find beautiful carpets for homes, plus our barn showroom is open Monday to Saturday by appointment only.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Bidjar Kelleh is a traditional hand-knotted Persian carpet originating from the town of Bidjar in western Iran, characterised by its elongated format and dense, heavy construction.

These carpets are woven using wool pile knotted onto a cotton or wool foundation, employing a wet-warp technique that compresses the threads to create an exceptionally rigid weave.

Authentic pieces exhibit a firm, heavy structure that resists folding, combined with intricate repeating field motifs such as the Herati pattern framed by distinct multi-stripe borders.

A long Bidjar carpet effectively grounds wide hallways, dining rooms, or living spaces, adding depth, pattern, and rich colour contrast against natural wood or stone flooring.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotary beat bar, prompt spot treatment with plain water, and periodic professional hand-washing ensure the longevity of the wool pile and dyes.
