The figure stands on a bronze base and is signed Campagne to one side and has a plaque to the front Phyrne Devant ses Juges par Compagne Sculpt. Phryne was a 4th century Greek courtesan who was renowned for her beauty When accused of blasphemy (a capital charge), she was defended by the orator Hyperides. When it seemed as if the verdict would be unfavourable, he tore her dress and displayed her bosom, which so moved the jury that they acquitted her; another version has Phryne tear her own dress and plead with each individual juror.

Campagne studied under Falguière and exhibited at the Salon from 1889. He produced numerous versions of Phryné, his most famous model. He exhibited a plaster version at the Paris Salon of 1893 and the marble example in 1894. He also cast the figure in bronze in various sizes,
