William Greaves (1852-1938) was born in Leeds and studied at Sheffield College of Art. He travelled and exhibited widely at galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and Liverpool. He worked mostly in oils and his subjects include landscapes in and around Wharfedale in Yorkshire and Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire.

"Old Church, Ellerburn" Yorkshire, is a charming oil painting on board measuring 7"x 9". It is signed lower right and dated 1884. On the back is the title "Old Church, Ellerburn" and it is framed in a quality gilt frame giving an overall size of 12"x 14".
