A crystoleum is a specialised method of applying and hand-colouring a transparent photograph on the inside of a convex glass pane, popular during the Victorian era.

Traditional crystoleums comprise a thin paper print mounted face-down on concave glass, rendered translucent with oil or varnish, and painstakingly hand-painted with oils or watercolours before backing.

Authentic pieces typically feature distinct convex glass, layered manual pigment application visible under magnification, and aged backing boards or seals consistent with late 19th-century framing practices.

These pieces function effectively as focal points within gallery walls or displayed solo against dark, moody wall colours to accentuate the ornate metallic frames.

Keep crystoleums out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, avoid moisture ingress behind the glass, and clean the exterior gently with a dry, soft cloth.
