Antique Silk Senneh Rug

19th century
Description

A rare silk rug from the mid 19th century, this finely woven all silk Senneh rug has exquisite early dyes, deep burgundy, pale blues and indigo blues and pale large central medallion.  Senneh weavers were not famous for producing silk rugs, they tended to weave with wool on a cotton foundation.  This early piece may well have been commissioned for the western market and export.

Dating around 160-170 years old, it does have condition issues, with damage to the sides in areas and fringe/ends too, with missing elements of design.  In the centre we can see evident wear and one larger area of damage.  We have secured this damage by sewing fabric to the back of this fine silk rug to prevent the holes from getting worse.

This silk rug is more suited to being used as a wall hanging or for display in a bedroom where it receives little or no traffic.  As obviously it is fragile, but the main body of the rug is solid and foundation is very good and lots of silk pile still visible.  Please view all the additional images to see this special rug up close.

Senneh or Senna, now called Sanandaj which is the capital of the Kurdistan province in Persia produced a variety of exceptional and decorative pieces by Kurd weavers in the late 19th century. Fine Senneh carpets, rugs and runners are often delicate in their design and their distinctive, weaving technique. Varying in design from all over floral shrub designs, Gol Farang designs and medallion patterns, their colours are often blue, red and using natural ivory wool.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Senneh rugs originate from the city of Sanandaj, historically known as Senneh, the capital of Kurdistan Province in western Iran. Woven primarily by Kurdish artisans since the 18th century, these carpets are distinguished by their refined weave, intricate pattern clarity, and historical significance within Persian textile art.

Authentic Senneh carpets are constructed using natural silk or high-grade spun wool on a fine silk or cotton warp and weft foundation. The use of natural vegetable dyes provides depth of colour, while single-stranded wefts contribute to a thin, flexible, and exceptionally durable structure.

Authentic pieces are identified by their asymmetric knotting technique (often referred to as the Senneh knot), high knot density, and light, supple handle. Visually, they feature sharp geometrical precision, finely detailed central medallions, and intricate repeat patterns such as the Herati or boteh.

A classic Persian rug serves as a foundational anchor in contemporary interiors, adding visual texture, warmth, and historic balance. Placing a detailed carpet beneath minimalist modern furniture or pairing it with polished timber floors creates a curated contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern lines.

Silk carpets require gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush to prevent fibre distortion. They should be positioned away from direct sunlight to avoid colour fading, turned periodically to balance wear, and cleaned exclusively by professional conservators specialising in hand-knotted antique textiles.
