Art Nouveau Bronze Bust "Tanagra" by Emmanuel Villanis, French 1890

19th century
Description

Art Nouveau Bronze Bust "Tanagra" by Emmanuel Villanis, French 1890

A striking Art Nouveau bronze bust of a young female entitled ‘Tanagra’ by Emmanuel Villanis. Her long hair is piled on top of her head in a bun, secured with a headband, she gazes downwards. This particular model has a beautiful three-colour patina

Titled ‘Tanagra’, Signed by E. Villanis, and stamped with unique number, this example has unfortunately lost its Societe des Bronze de Paris foundry seal, there is a small hole on the back where it should be.

Tanagra: was the Naiad Nymph of the spring, well or fountain of the town of Tanagra in Boiotia (central Greece). She was a daughter of the local river-god Asopos who was loved by the gods Hermes and Ares-

This piece is in good condition with some patination but has had a small hole drilled into the rear of the base presumably as an aid for mounting.

Emmanuel Villanis: (12 December 1858 - 28 August 1914) was a French sculptor. He was born in Lille, France, and died in Paris.

He studied at the Accademia Albertina in Turin, where one of his teachers was Odoardo Tabacchi. In 1885, Villanis lived in Paris and became one of the most productive sculptors towards the end of the 19th century. His female bronze busts, cast by the Society de Bronze de Paris, were exported all over the world from Paris, particularly to the United States. Today his sculptures can be found regularly at auctions

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau bronze busts feature flowing sinuous lines, organic forms, and naturalistic proportions, often depicting stylized classical female figures with elaborate hair and expressive features popular in France around 1890.

Antique bronze sculptures were typically cast using the lost-wax or sand-casting technique, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface details and the application of chemical patinas to achieve rich tones of brown, green, or dark metallic hues.

Authentic 19th-century French bronzes usually feature cast or cold-stamped signatures from the sculptor, foundry marks, distinct chasing marks showing hand craftsmanship, and natural surface patination showing age rather than painted synthetic finishes.

An Art Nouveau bronze bust functions well as a focal accent on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table, contrasting effectively against clean backdrop walls, dark wood panelling, or stone surfaces.

Preserve antique bronze by dusting regularly with a clean, dry, soft microfibre cloth and applying a thin coat of microcrystalline wax annually to protect against atmospheric moisture and oxidisation; avoid abrasive chemical cleaners or water.
