How do I distinguish Regency from Georgian pieces?

Georgian furniture generally spans the eighteenth century, drawing heavily on classic architectural proportions and solid mahogany construction. Styles evolved from early George II designs through the refined lines of the George III period. Regency pieces date from the early nineteenth century and often incorporate exotic timbers like rosewood alongside brass inlay or ormolu mounts. They frequently reflect classical French or ancient Roman influences inspired by the Regency era.

Where were these cabinets used?

These cabinets served primarily in private libraries, studies, and formal drawing rooms of large townhouses and country estates. Wealthy individuals used them for managing household accounts, writing letters, and storing valuable documents. Because paperwork was handled away from public view, the drop-front design allowed owners to lock away private correspondence securely when guests visited.

How do I care for antique dark wood?

Antique mahogany and rosewood benefit from stable indoor environments away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature shifts. Excessive heat or dryness can cause timbers to split or veneer to lift from the core. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished finish. Periodic application of traditional beeswax helps nourish the wood and maintain its natural lustre without building up heavy chemical residues.
