What is a cabriole leg?

A cabriole leg is a curved furniture support that bows outward at the knee and tapers inward at the ankle, ending in a foot such as a pad or claw. This distinct shape derives from ancient animal legs and provides structural stability without requiring heavy vertical posts.

How do I date a console table?

Dating relies on identifying the secondary timbers used inside drawers, the cut of the joinery, and the prevailing style of the period. Revival pieces from the Edwardian era or the 1920s often mimic Georgian or Queen Anne forms. Examining the wear patterns on the feet and the finish of the wood helps distinguish original 18th-century examples from later interpretations.

Where should I place a console table?

Console tables fit naturally against hallways, living room walls, or beneath large mirrors where surface space is required without a deep footprint. Their decorative backs allow some freestanding variants to sit in open rooms. Smaller lowboys and card tables adapt well to corners or smaller reception spaces.

Are marble top consoles fragile?

Marble tops add significant weight to a console table, providing a durable and cool surface for displays. The timber frames beneath are constructed to bear this heavy load safely. Care involves avoiding acidic spills that might etch the polished stone surface over time.
