What is the difference between a toilet mirror and a cheval mirror?

A toilet mirror is a tabletop piece with a small drawer base designed for close grooming on a chest or dressing table. In contrast, a cheval mirror is a tall freestanding floor glass that reflects the full figure. Both types utilise swing mechanisms on pivot screws, but their scale and placement in a room differ entirely.

How can I date a mahogany swing mirror?

Dating relies on the proportions, foot styles, and drawer construction methods visible within the base. Georgian examples often feature bracket feet and fine cockbeading, while Victorian pieces tend to be heavier with round turned supports. Secondary woods and the style of the brass hardware also provide clear indicators of the period of manufacture.

Where should I place a swing mirror in my home?

These mirrors sit comfortably on top of chests of drawers, sideboards, or dedicated dressing tables where the height allows for comfortable daily use. Freestanding cheval versions work well in bedrooms or dressing rooms as independent statement pieces. Ensure the surface is level and sturdy enough to support the weight of the frame and drawer box.

Are the mirror plates original?

Many mirrors retain their original mercury or early silvered glass, which often displays charming foxing, light spotting, and slight distortion. Replacement glass is also common in pieces that survived active daily use over two centuries. Examining the backing boards and retention pins helps determine whether the glass has been updated.
