Where should an arch top wall mirror be hung?

These mirrors are traditionally positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece where the curved top draws the eye toward the ceiling. They also function effectively on main living room walls to amplify natural light and create a sense of expanded space. Because of their substantial size and weight, they require secure wall fixings anchored directly into structural studs or masonry. Positioning them opposite a window maximises their ability to brighten darker corners of the room.

How do I identify a nineteenth-century frame?

Nineteenth-century frames typically exhibit heavy timber construction combined with moulded gesso decoration rather than modern synthetic resins. Inspecting the reverse reveals older wooden backing boards, hand-cut screws or nails, and the natural patina of age on the materials. The mirror glass may show subtle distortions or foxing spots within the silvering, indicating traditional manufacturing methods predating modern float glass.

What is the difference between a pier mirror and an overmantel?

Pier mirrors were originally designed to fit the narrow wall space between two windows, often sitting above a console table. They tend to be taller and narrower than their fireplace counterparts. Overmantels are specifically proportioned to span the width of a fireplace, prioritising horizontal breadth to match the scale of the hearth below.

Are French and English styles distinct?

English nineteenth-century examples frequently feature heavy carved wood, gesso, and elaborate rope twist or tulip framing designed for prominent Victorian interiors. French pieces, particularly Louis Philippe designs, lean towards simpler arched profiles with understated beaded or ribbed borders. The French aesthetic often emphasises clean architectural sweeps, whereas the English iterations lean into decorative surface relief.
