How do I clean an antique wooden seat?

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth to prevent particulate build-up in carved crevices and joints. Avoid modern silicone polishes, applying traditional beeswax sparingly when the timber appears dry. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the timber from drying out, cracking, or causing traditional rush and cane seating to snap.

Were these chairs used for dining?

Many of these pieces served formal dining purposes, particularly mahogany sets from the Georgian and Regency periods. Sets often included matching armchairs for the heads of the table. Simpler ladderback and Windsor chairs served everyday dining functions in farmhouses and country cottages, prioritising durability over formal elegance.

How do I identify a Windsor chair?

Windsor chairs feature a distinct thick solid wooden seat that acts as the central anchor for all other components. The legs and back spindles are tenoned directly into bored holes through this plank. Country versions often combine yew, elm, and ash, displaying varied spindle arrangements and sometimes incorporating a central pierced splat.

What is a hall chair used for?

Hall chairs were placed in entranceways and grand corridors rather than used for prolonged seating. Guests and visitors sat on them briefly while waiting to be announced. Because they functioned as decorative statements of status, their wooden seats and backs frequently displayed carved family crests or painted heraldry.
