What is an antique wooden dressing table?

An antique wooden dressing table is a dedicated piece of furniture designed for personal grooming, featuring drawers for storage and often an attached or matching mirror. These pieces reflect the stylistic shifts of periods from the 18th century through the Art Deco era, constructed in timbers like mahogany, walnut, and oak.

How do I date an antique dressing table?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, construction methods like dovetailing, and the overall stylistic traits of periods such as Georgian, Regency, or Victorian. Hardware fittings, mirror construction, and secondary woods like pine or fruit wood also offer strong chronological indicators.

Were stools included with dressing tables?

Stools were often paired with dressing tables, particularly in Victorian and 1920s examples, utilising matching woods such as walnut, rosewood, or goncalo alves. Many surviving stools feature upholstered tops and carved legs that echo the design motifs of the main dressing table.

How do I care for a wooden dressing table?

Maintenance involves keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to protect vulnerable veneers like burr elm and flame mahogany. Applying appropriate wax polishes occasionally helps maintain the finish on hardwoods without building up unwanted residues.
