How were antique tea trays used?

These trays served primarily to transport teapots, cups, and saucers from the kitchen to the drawing room during formal afternoon visits. They also functioned as display surfaces for decanters and glassware on sideboards. Over time, many larger trays found secondary life mounted on folding or fixed wooden stands to operate as occasional cocktail or coffee tables.

Can I use an antique tray daily?

Most metal and sturdy timber trays handle careful daily service, provided they are lifted by their handles and kept away from standing moisture. Silver-plated and brass varieties require gentle polishing to maintain their finish without wearing away the plating. Papier-mâché and lacquer pieces demand more delicate treatment, functioning best for dry display or light service to protect their painted surfaces.

How do I date a silver tray?

Sterling silver trays carry clear hallmarks stamped directly into the metal, revealing the assay office, the maker's mark, and a specific date letter. Comparing these stamps against standard hallmarking reference tables provides the exact year of manufacture. Silver-plated items rely on maker stamps, registration numbers, and stylistic clues such as Victorian scrollwork or Edwardian pierced galleries to narrow down the decade.
