How do I identify the period of a painting?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, costume details, the type of support used, and framing techniques. Examining the reverse of the canvas or panel often reveals period inscriptions, maker stamps, or old labels. Material analysis of the wood, nails, and canvas weave further assists in placing the work within a specific century or decade.

Were these paintings always framed?

Most works were paired with a frame intended to complement the aesthetic of the period. Giltwood and carved wooden frames provided a finished boundary that isolated the scene from its surroundings. Original frames form an important part of the object's history, showing matching wear and construction methods consistent with the canvas age.

How should I care for an oil painting?

Display works away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity to protect the canvas and pigments. Avoid touching the painted surface, as natural oils from skin can damage the fragile varnish layer. Dust gently with a soft, dry brush when necessary, and consult a professional conservator before attempting any cleaning.

What is the difference between canvas and panel supports?

Canvas offers a flexible, textured woven surface that responds to atmospheric changes by tightening or loosening. Panels provide a rigid, smooth foundation made from wood, metal or board that resists punctures. Artists chose supports based on availability, portability, and the specific level of fine detail they wished to achieve in the composition.
